What is the Mergado Sources extension?#
Mergado Sources is an extension that enables users to automatically write data from external sources directly into projects in Mergado Editor. The data obtained is stored in newly created elements, which can then be worked with in Mergado Editor just like any other elements. With this extension, you can use data from Google Ads, Sklik, Search Console, GPT, Icecat, or copy data within Mergado from one project to another.
The extension has no dedicated interface for browsing data — its sole purpose is to write data into Mergado Editor. The resulting data will be visible directly at your products in the project in Mergado Editor, in the respective elements.
The extension is ideal for:
- PPC specialists who need to segment products by performance (primarily using Sklik and Google Ads).
- SEO specialists tracking organic search results (primarily using Search Console).
- Product feed managers who work with product descriptions or want to supplement product data with missing information.
Price and billing#
Using the Mergado Sources extension is completely free for Mergado Editor users.
The extension is tied to one specific project in Mergado and is free regardless of the number of elements created for the purpose of using external source data.
Since the extension is free, there is no trial period.
Although the Mergado Sources extension itself is completely free, it is important to distinguish between the cost of the extension and the cost of using OpenAI (GPT). Connecting to OpenAI (GPT) uses a paid API where the price is charged based on tokens (units of text, where approximately 1,000 tokens correspond to 750 words). These charges are paid by the user directly to the provider (OpenAI), which ensures maximum transparency. To keep costs under control, we recommend setting spending limits in the OpenAI admin.
What you need to get started with Mergado Sources#
- A user account and an active project in Mergado Editor.
- Access credentials for the data sources you want to use (API key, username, or authorisation via Google account).
Main features#
- Sklik — Import data on average cost per click and average keyword search volume for approximately the last two months.
- Google Ads — Import statistics directly to individual products: number of clicks, costs, number of conversions, revenue (conversion value), impressions, click-through rate, average cost per click, and ROAS (calculated as the ratio of conversion value to costs). Data can be downloaded for periods of 7, 30, or 90 days.
- Google Search Console — Retrieve performance data (clicks, impressions, position, click-through rate) for specific URLs or search queries. For a search query, you can also get the URL of the page that most frequently appeared as the first result for that query.
- OpenAI (GPT) — Enables automatic generation of descriptions, bulk text rewriting, product categorisation, or parameter extraction (colour, size, manufacturer).
- Icecat — From this open catalogue, you can fill in missing product information such as product name, main image, brand text name, brand logo, manufacturer’s product code, category, short description, long description, key features in bullet points, gallery images, and product line information.
- Mergado (Import from another project) — Easily copy data between different projects within the same online store in Mergado.
Working in Mergado Sources#
Activate the extension in Mergado Store: I want to activate → select the project for which you want to enable the extension → Enable.
In the Mergado Sources interface, you will see the Elements and Data sources tabs.
Data sources#
The Data sources tab is the first place you must visit after activating the extension, as this is where you need to connect the specific external systems from which you want to pull data. The extension currently supports six main types of connections: Sklik, Google Ads, Google Search Console, OpenAI, Icecat, and Mergado.
The connection process varies by source type:
- Automatic connection — Mergado Editor (for copying data between projects within the same online store) is connected automatically.
- Username or API key — For sources such as Sklik, OpenAI, or Icecat, you need to enter the relevant credential.
- Authorisation via Google — For Google services, a standard authorisation process takes place in a separate window.
At each source, you will see the connection status. If everything is in order, you will see a green message “Connection is active” next to the respective source. If an error occurs, you will see a red warning next to that source, and clicking View details will show you details about the problem.
How to connect individual data sources?#
Follow these detailed guides for each service:
- Sklik — How to connect Sklik and Mergado Sources
- Google Ads — How to connect Google Ads and Mergado Sources
- Google Search Console — How to connect Google Search Console and Mergado Sources
- OpenAI — How to connect OpenAI and Mergado Sources
- Icecat — How to connect Icecat and Mergado Sources
- Mergado — This connection is created automatically between projects within the same online store. The requirement is that Mergado Sources must be enabled on both projects (source and target).
Elements#
On the Elements tab, you set the rules for data import. You specify what data from external sources you want to retrieve, and into which elements in your project in Mergado Editor it should be written.
Each rule created in Mergado Sources has its own cache. If the extension already knows the result for a given input value, it writes it immediately. If not, it queues the request.
For data obtained from a source to appear in the project, the project in Mergado Editor must be regenerated at least twice. On the first run, Mergado Sources loads the data it needs to retrieve, and on the second run (after downloading it from the API) it writes it to the elements. It is advisable to wait a moment between regenerations, especially for slower APIs such as OpenAI.
General element creation process#
Regardless of the data source chosen, the basic process is always the same:
- Click the Create new element button.
- Select the pre-connected Data source.
- Select the product Query to which the data import should be applied (e.g., “All products” or a specific segment where descriptions are missing).
- Perform the custom configuration for the specific source (see below).
- Specify the target element into which the data should be written.
- Either let Mergado Sources Create element automatically.
- Or select Choose element manually from the list and select from the list of existing elements in the project.
- Click Save element.
Detailed settings by source type#
1. Sklik#
This source allows you to import data on average keyword search volume and average cost per click (CPC) for approximately the last two months into the feed. This data is ideal for projects containing keywords or categories with generic names, where you want to track real user interest in the market. Specialists use it to identify potentially successful products that have high search volume but may currently be overlooked in advertising.
- Input data: Select an element from your project that contains a keyword (e.g.,
EXACT_NAME). - Data from data source: Select what data you want to retrieve.
- average CPC (avgCpc)
- average search volume (avgSearchCount)
2. Google Ads#
Connecting to Google Ads is used to import key performance metrics, such as costs, conversions, revenue, impressions, or ROAS, directly to specific items in your feed. For PPC specialists, this source is indispensable for advanced labelling, which allows products to be divided into, for example, “bestsellers” and “zombie” products (products with costs but no conversions). Data enriched this way enables much more precise optimisation of Performance Max campaigns and more efficient management of advertising budgets.
- Input data from Mergado export: Select an element from your project that contains the product ID (e.g.,
ITEM_ID). If ag:idelement exists in the project, the extension will pre-fill it automatically. - Data collection period: Set the time period for which you want to retrieve statistics — 7, 30, or 90 days.
- Data from data source: Select what data you want to retrieve.
- clicks (clicks)
- costs (cost)
- conversions (conversions)
- revenue / conversion value (conversions value)
- impressions (impressions)
- CTR / click-through rate (ctr)
- CPC / average cost per click (cpc)
- ROAS / return on ad spend (roas)
3. Google Search Console#
From this source, you get valuable information about the performance of your products in organic Google search — specifically the number of clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. SEO specialists use this data to analyse which products need organic support and which pages have potential for improved visibility. In search query mode, the source also provides information about which URL appeared most frequently as the first result for a given keyword, which helps with verifying correct targeting.
- Input data from Mergado export: Select an element from your project based on which mode you want to use. For Landing page mode, select an element with a URL (e.g.,
URL); for Search query mode, select an element with a keyword (e.g.,NAME_EXACT). - Page URL: This field loads a list of domains you have verified under your account in Google Search Console. Select the specific domain. It can be either a specific domain (e.g.,
https://www.mergado.com/) or an entire group (e.g.,sc-domain:mergado.com). If this is set incorrectly, the connection will not work. - Dimension to search data by: Select one of the modes.
- Landing page — by URL
- Search query — by keyword
- Data from data source: Select what data you want to retrieve.
- clicks (clicks)
- impressions (impressions)
- CTR / click-through rate (ctr)
- position (position)
- URL of top page (topPageUrl) — search query mode only
4. OpenAI#
Using GPT models enables automated creation and editing of text content, such as generating unique product descriptions, translations into foreign languages, or bulk rewriting of supplier texts to remove duplicates.
In addition to creative tasks, GPT is an excellent helper for cleaning technical data, being able to automatically extract colours, sizes, or manufacturers from unstructured labels and categorise products correctly. This saves content managers hours of manual work when filling in missing information for thousands of products.
Warning: Texts are generated by artificial intelligence, which can sometimes “make things up” or insert irrelevant links. We therefore recommend reviewing the outputs.
- Query type for GPT:
- Enter manually — In the Query for ChatGPT field, write your own prompt for GPT. You can use variables from your project in the prompt. (E.g., “Write a sales description for the product
%NAME%with these parameters:%DESCRIPTION%.”)- Select the Model creativity level (temperature) — set from 0 (conservative responses) to 2 (very creative texts). The default value is 0.5.
- Select category — Automatically assigns products to categories.
- In the respective field, select the element that contains the category information (e.g., product name, short description, keywords). For more precise results, it is advisable for the selected element to contain or at least hint at the category information.
- In the following field, list the specific categories for the model to choose from. We recommend including an “other” option in the list, in case it is not possible to select from the list.
- Select size — Automatically determines the product size.
- In the respective field, select the element that contains the size information (e.g., product description).
- In the following field, list the specific sizes for the model to choose from. We recommend including an “other” option (or “unknown size”, etc.) in the list, in case it is not possible to select from the list.
- Select colour — Automatically determines the product colour.
- In the respective field, select the element that contains the colour information (e.g., product description).
- In the following field, list the specific colours for the model to choose from. We recommend including an “other” option in the list, in case it is not possible to select from the list.
- Determine manufacturer — Automatically determines the product manufacturer.
- In the respective field, select the element that contains the manufacturer information. The model will determine which manufacturer it is.
- In the following field, list the specific manufacturers for the model to choose from. We recommend including an “other” option in the list, in case it is not possible to select from the list.
- Rewrite text — Automatically rewrites text in different words. The rewritten text will contain HTML formatting.
- In the respective field, select the element that contains the text for the model to rewrite.
- Select the language in which the model will write the text (Czech, Slovak, English, Hungarian).
- Rewrite to short text — Automatically shortens and rewrites text in different words. The rewritten text will be around 150 characters and without HTML tags.
- In the respective field, select the element that contains the text for the model to rewrite and shorten.
- Select the language in which the model will write the text (Czech, Slovak, English, Hungarian).
- Enter manually — In the Query for ChatGPT field, write your own prompt for GPT. You can use variables from your project in the prompt. (E.g., “Write a sales description for the product
- Data from data source: Select which GPT model you want to use (e.g., gpt-4, gpt-4.1, gpt-5, etc.)
5. Icecat#
This open catalogue is used to automatically fill in missing product information, such as professional technical descriptions, parameters, key feature bullet points, or images, based on EAN/GTIN codes. It is ideal for online stores that do not have their own rich supplier data and need to quickly enrich their catalogue with quality materials in various languages including Czech and Slovak. This helps increase the informational value of the online store for customers and improve the conversion rate thanks to detailed product specifications.
- Input data from Mergado export: Select the element that contains the GTIN/EAN.
- Search by IceCat element: The
GTINelement is required here. - Retrieve from IceCat element: Select the information you want to retrieve from the Icecat catalogue.
- Language for searching in the IceCat database: Select the language in which the data should be retrieved and saved.
6. Mergado#
This feature is used to efficiently copy data between different projects within the same online store without the need to create complex synchronisation feeds. It is the ideal tool for managing a so-called “master feed”, in which you prepare perfect names and descriptions once, and these are then mirrored to all other exports for different advertising systems. The requirement is that Mergado Sources is running on both projects (source and target).
- Source export: Select the project from which you want to pull data.
- Unique matching element from source export: Select the matching element in the source project.
- Unique matching element from target export: Select the matching element in the target project.
- Element whose value will be exported: Select the element whose value you want to copy to the target project.
Data is transferred between projects with a certain delay — changes will only take effect after both projects (source and target) have been processed.
FAQ#
What is Mergado Sources and what is it used for?#
Mergado Sources is a Mergado Editor extension that automatically downloads data from external platforms (such as Google Ads, Sklik, or Icecat) and writes it directly into your product feed. You do not need to copy data manually — just specify which data you want and the extension does the rest.
Who is Mergado Sources for?#
It is primarily valued by PPC specialists who want to segment products by their performance in advertising systems, SEO specialists tracking organic search results, and product feed managers who need to fill in missing product information.
How much does the extension cost?#
The extension is completely free. The exception is OpenAI API costs — these are paid directly to OpenAI based on actual usage. All other connections (Sklik, Google Ads, Search Console, Icecat, Mergado) have no additional charges.
Do I have to pay for the OpenAI connection?#
Yes. OpenAI charges for every processed token (approximately 1,000 tokens correspond to 750 words). You pay OpenAI directly, not through Mergado Sources. We recommend setting a spending limit in the OpenAI admin to keep costs under control.
Where will I see the data the extension has downloaded?#
Mergado Sources has no dedicated interface for browsing data. You will see the results directly in the project in Mergado Editor — at individual products in the respective elements.
What do I need to start using the extension?#
You need an active user account and a project in Mergado Editor, plus access credentials for the data sources you want to use — depending on the source, this is an API key, a username, or sign-in via Google account.
Can I have the extension active on multiple projects at once?#
Yes, but the extension must be activated separately for each project.
What are data sources and elements in Mergado Sources?#
Data sources are external systems (Google Ads, Sklik, etc.) from which the extension pulls data — you set up connections to them on the Data sources tab. On the Elements tab, you then set up specific rules that determine what data should be downloaded and into which field (element) in the feed it should be written.
Why didn’t data appear right after the first regeneration?#
For data to appear in the project, you need to regenerate the project at least twice. On the first regeneration, the extension loads what data it needs to retrieve. On the second regeneration (after downloading it) it then writes the data to the elements. For slower APIs such as OpenAI, it is advisable to wait a moment between regenerations.
How do I know the connection to a data source is working?#
On the Data sources tab, you will see a green “Connection is active” status next to each source. If an error occurs, a red warning is displayed and you can view the details via the “View details” button.
Can I choose which products data is downloaded for?#
Yes. When creating an element, you select a specific product query from Mergado Editor — for example, “All products” or just a segment where descriptions are missing. This is especially useful with OpenAI, where processing data costs money and it makes sense to limit it to relevant products only.
What data can I retrieve from Sklik?#
From Sklik, you can import average cost per click (CPC) and average keyword search volume for approximately the last two months.
What data can I retrieve from Google Ads?#
From Google Ads, you can import the number of clicks, costs, number of conversions, revenue (conversion value), impressions, click-through rate (CTR), average cost per click (CPC), and ROAS for individual products. Data can be downloaded for periods of 7, 30, or 90 days.
What data can I retrieve from Google Search Console?#
From Search Console, you can get the number of clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position — either for specific page URLs or for search queries. For search queries, you can also find out which URL appeared most frequently as the first result for that query.
What is the Icecat connection used for?#
Icecat is a product catalogue from which you can automatically fill in missing product information — for example, name, description, images, category, or technical parameters — based on EAN/GTIN codes. Data is available in various languages including Czech and Slovak. Catalogue coverage varies by sector — for example, in the electronics segment it tends to be significantly better than in other categories.
What is the OpenAI (GPT) connection used for?#
GPT models allow you to automatically generate or rewrite texts — for example, product descriptions, translations, short annotations, or product categorisation. Texts are generated by artificial intelligence, so we recommend reviewing the outputs.
What is the import from another Mergado project feature and how can I use it?#
This feature allows you to copy data between different projects within the same online store in Mergado. It is useful, for example, for managing a so-called master feed — you prepare perfect names and descriptions once, and these are then automatically mirrored to all other exports. The requirement is that Mergado Sources is active on both projects (source and target). Data is transferred with a certain delay — changes will only take effect after both projects have been processed.
