Element g:identifier_exists#

Basic information#

The g:identifier_exists element tells Google that the product has no unique identifiers — meaning it has no g:gtin (EAN/ISBN/UPC), no g:mpn (Manufacturer Part Number), and no g:brand (manufacturer brand).

The permitted values are false or no.

If the product has at least one of the identifiers listed above, do not include g:identifier_exists in the feed.

Elements whose absence requires the use of g:identifier_exists:

  • g:gtin — numeric product code (EAN, ISBN, UPC…)
  • g:mpn — Manufacturer Part Number
  • g:brand — product brand or manufacturer

Frequently asked questions#

  • When do I need to use g:identifier_exists?
    • When the product has none of these three identifiers: g:gtin, g:mpn, or g:brand. This typically applies to custom products or made-to-order items where the manufacturer also sells under their own private label without assigned codes.
    • If the product has at least one identifier, do not use g:identifier_exists.
  • What value should I enter in g:identifier_exists?
    • Enter the value false or no. Both values are accepted by Google as equivalent.
  • How do I populate the g:identifier_exists element in Mergado?
    • First, on the Products page, create a query for products that have no identifiers. On the Elements page, verify that the g:identifier_exists element exists in the feed. If it does not, create it manually. Then create a Rewrite rule that sets the value false for the selected products.
  • What happens if I do not fill in g:identifier_exists and products have no identifiers?
    • Google may reject such products or display them with limited visibility in Google Shopping. Correctly filling in this element prevents errors in Google Merchant Center.

What Mergado Audit checks for the g:identifier_exists element#

  • Whether the g:identifier_exists element is present for products that have neither g:gtin, g:mpn, nor g:brand filled in.
