Safe zone#

Safe zone is a setting in the Feed Image Editor graphic template that lets you define the space available for placing graphic layers relative to the product in the image. Using the safe zone, you make sure that labels, text, or other graphic elements placed in this area never cover the product, regardless of how large the product is or how it is positioned in the image.

How it works#

The safe zone in pixels defines a protected area around the product. Layers placed in the hatched area outside this zone will never cover the product. The following applies:

  • Positive value – the product shrinks, the protected zone expands, and graphic elements stay further away from the product.

  • Negative value – the product grows, and graphic elements move closer to its edges or may partially cover it.

A visual overview of the result is available directly on the canvas using previews of random products from the feed, or on the Previews page.

Setting it up in the extension#

  1. Open an existing template or create a new template in Feed Image Editor.

  2. Go to tab 3, section b – Position of the main image on the canvas.

  3. Set the safe zone in pixels – a positive value shrinks the product, creating a larger safe zone. A negative value enlarges the product, making the safe zone smaller.

  4. Check the result directly in the canvas preview or using previews of random products.

Use the Do not show overflow in preview button to show or hide the overflow area on the canvas.

Combining with Autocrop#

The safe zone works best in combination with Autocrop, which automatically centers the product on the canvas and stretches it to fill the whole output format. When the product is always centered, graphic layers can reliably be placed in the corners or edges of the image with the certainty that they will not cover the product – for every product in the feed, regardless of its shape or size in the original image.

When the safe zone comes in handy#

The feature is useful anywhere the template contains graphic layers covering part of the image:

  • Price tags or discounts placed in the corner of the image.

  • Logo or store name as a graphic watermark.

  • CTA elements (calls to action) added over the product image.

FAQ#

What is the hatched area shown in the editor after setting the safe zone?#

The hatched area shows the safe zone – the area where graphic layers can be placed without risk of covering the product. If a graphic element lies entirely within this area, it will not touch the product. Use the Do not show overflow in preview button to show or hide the overflow area on the canvas.

Do I need Autocrop active for the safe zone to work?#

No. The safe zone works even without the Autocrop feature. Without it, however, there is no guarantee that the product will always be in the same part of the canvas, so graphic layers may touch the product on some items even with a correctly set safe zone value. Combining it with Autocrop reliably stabilizes the result.

What safe zone value should I set?#

It depends on the size of the graphic elements in the template and how much space you want to keep around the product. We recommend starting with a small positive value and checking the result continuously using the Random product button in the left panel or on the Previews page, until you reach the desired result.

Does the safe zone change the output dimensions of the image?#

No. The safe zone only affects the position and apparent size of the product within the canvas. The output image format stays whatever is set in the template.

Can the safe zone be used with collages or GIFs as well?#

No. The safe zone is part of the main image position settings on the canvas and applies primarily to graphic templates with a single product image.
