What is the Mergado Files extension?#
Mergado Files is an extension that serves as a simple data and file storage. Its main purpose is to allow marketers and online store managers to quickly upload and publish files to a publicly accessible URL.
The extension is ideal for:
- Marketing agency staff and freelance specialists who need to update ad data instantly.
- Online stores that receive supplier data in files and need to convert them to a URL for further processing.
- Projects that require automated and bulk campaign updates from one central location.
Pricing and billing#
Using the Mergado Files extension is completely free for Mergado Editor users and is available with no additional charges.
Use of the extension is tied to a specific online store in Mergado and is free regardless of the number of files or directories created.
Since the extension is free, it has no trial period.
What you need to start using Mergado Files#
- A user account in Mergado Editor.
Key features#
- Instant online publishing – As soon as you upload or create a file, the extension generates a publicly accessible URL that matches the file name. You can use this URL immediately in an XML feed to add missing product images or as a data source for a Data file import rule.
- Smart link generation – Public URLs correspond exactly to your file names. If you name images by product ID (e.g. 123.jpg), you can then use a simple rule in Mergado Editor to bulk-add the image URLs to the relevant products.
- Built-in editors for instant changes – No more downloading and re-uploading text files for a minor change. You can create and edit simple text files directly in the extension. Available editors:
- CSV editor – A clear, spreadsheet-like interface ideal for managing configuration tables.
- Markdown editor – A format ideal for preparing contextual data for artificial intelligence (AI).
- Simple editor – For quick edits to TXT or XML files.
- The central hub for your advertising – Mergado Files lets you manage dozens of projects from one place. Simply create one configuration CSV file (e.g. for currency or size conversions), connect it to multiple projects in Mergado, and any change to that file is instantly reflected across all your advertising.
- Keeping data organized – You can organize your files neatly into directories and subdirectories, which is especially useful for large projects with thousands of images. You can also download the entire contents of a directory as a ZIP archive at any time.
- Access control – The extension respects the permissions you have set up in Mergado Editor. Everyone with access to the online store where the extension is active also has access to the files. For files you don’t want to be publicly visible, you can also disable public access via the link.
Working in Mergado Files#
You can activate the extension in the Mergado Store: I want to activate → select the online store for which you want to enable the extension → Enable.
In the Mergado Files extension interface, you will see a list of all your files and directories.
How to create a new file or directory?#
You can get data into your Mergado Files storage in two ways — either create it directly in the extension interface (for text files), or simply upload it from your computer. The whole process starts by clicking New file/directory. If you are currently inside one of the existing directories, clicking New file/directory will create the file or directory inside that directory.
You then name the file or directory being created and upload the relevant file (you can also bulk-upload multiple files at once).
The second option is to name and create a text file directly in the extension. The file will appear in your list of files/directories. Click the pencil icon next to the file to choose which text editor you want to use (Markdown editor, Simple editor, CSV editor), then create and save the file.
To keep your storage organized, you can create your own structure of directories and subdirectories. Files don’t have to sit in one big pile — you can sort them logically, for example by data type (images, feeds, configuration).
Once files are in the extension, you can continue working with them — rename, duplicate, edit content, delete, disable or re-enable public URL access, copy the URL, or download the entire contents of a specific directory to your computer as a ZIP archive.
When creating or uploading files, it’s good practice to name them logically (e.g. images by product ID or EAN). Since the file’s public URL matches its name, this will make it easier to set up automated data linking in Mergado Editor later. The URL is created in the form:
https://app.emfiles.app/api/file/link/UNIQUE_KEY/FILE_NAME_WITH_PATH_INCLUDING_DIRECTORIES
This flexible system means you always have all your supplementary data sources — such as missing images, configuration CSVs, or static XML feeds — at hand and under your control, right alongside your projects.
Practical tips and tutorials for using Mergado Files#
The Mergado Files extension is a versatile tool designed to give marketers and online store managers the freedom to update data without waiting for developer intervention. Here are the three main ways you can use it:
Quickly adding missing product images#
If product images are missing from a data feed for advertising platforms (e.g. Heureka, Google, Facebook), the online store hasn’t added them to the website yet, but you as the manager want to add them to the feed quickly, you can resolve the situation with Mergado Files.
Steps:
- Bulk-upload the required images from your computer to Mergado Files.
- Name the files logically, for example by product ID (e.g. 123.jpg).
→ Mergado Files will generate public URLs for the files in the form
https://app.emfiles.app/api/file/link/UNIQUE_KEY/FILE_NAME_WITH_PATH_INCLUDING_DIRECTORIESFor example:https://app.emfiles.app/api/file/link/acc7c2d6b2e42c29f21e5719b5agf587/images/123.jpg - In Mergado Editor, create a product query for products that have an empty value in the element containing the image URL (e.g. the
IMAGEelement). - Then create a Rewrite rule to insert the image URL into the relevant element.
→ Name the rule.
→ Select the product query you created in the previous step.
→ Select the element that contains the image URL (e.g. the IMAGE element).
→ Because the URL in Mergado Files corresponds exactly to the file name, simply insert a template into the rule in the form: https://app.emfiles.app/api/file/link/acc7c2d6b2e42c29f21e5719b5agf587/images/%ITEM_ID%.jpg
→ Save the rule.
The editor will then automatically assign the correct images to all products at once. You can of course also add URLs created in Mergado Files to products in Mergado Editor individually by entering them manually.
Creating a data feed without an online store#
Mergado Files lets you create a static feed (it won’t change until you update it yourself in the extension), which can serve as the basis for a new project in Mergado. This is ideal for wholesale price lists, inventory management, or sellers who don’t have a feed at all.
Steps:
- Create a simple XML or CSV file on your computer.
- Upload this file to Mergado Files and copy its public URL.
- Use this URL as the input URL when creating a new project in Mergado Editor.
- You can then expand and edit the feed content either directly in Mergado using rules, or by editing the source file in Mergado Files using the built-in CSV editor.
Central ad management using configuration CSVs#
This advanced approach lets you make automated updates to many projects from one central location. A typical example is changing CPC based on the time of day or bulk size conversions.
Steps:
- Create a configuration CSV file (e.g. directly in Mergado Files) containing a matching column (e.g. hour 0–23) and a coefficient value for the change (e.g. 1.2 for a 20% increase).
- In Mergado Editor, use the Data file import rule on the relevant exports, entering the URL of your configuration CSV as the data source.
- Link the data from the CSV to your feed (e.g. using the current hour element from the Bidding Fox Elements extension) and then calculate the new value using the Calculation rule.
- Any future change to this single CSV file in Mergado Files is instantly reflected in all connected projects, saving hours of work.

Important notes and limitations#
- Not suitable for sensitive data – Uploaded files are publicly accessible via URL (even if the URL is hard to guess). Public access via the link can be disabled in Mergado Files, but the extension is not primarily designed for storing highly confidential information. It is intended mainly for sharing data sources for advertising purposes.
- Not a primary CDN – The extension was not designed for extremely fast loading of a large number of files at once by a single web page (typically as a CDN replacement for an online store website). For feed marketing purposes, however, it is fully sufficient.
- Static nature – Data in files is static until you manually change it in Mergado Files or upload a new version.
FAQ#
What is Mergado Files and what is it used for?#
Mergado Files is a Mergado Editor extension that works as a simple online file storage. Its main purpose is to allow marketers and online store managers to upload files to the internet and make them instantly accessible via a public URL — without needing your own web hosting or developer involvement. It is typically used for adding missing product images or other data to a product feed, creating configuration CSVs for bulk ad management, or as a data source for a new project in Mergado when the online store doesn’t have its own feed.
How much does Mergado Files cost?#
The extension is completely free for all Mergado Editor users, regardless of the number of files or directories created.
How do I give other team members or agency colleagues access to the files?#
Access is automatically granted to all users who have access to the given online store in Mergado Editor. No additional sharing setup is required.
Are files uploaded to Mergado Files publicly accessible?#
Yes, every uploaded file gets a public URL that is difficult to guess but is technically accessible to anyone who knows it. If you don’t want a specific file to be publicly accessible, you can disable public access via the link directly in the extension.
Can I edit files directly in Mergado Files, or do I have to download and re-upload them each time?#
Text files can be edited directly in the extension using the built-in editors — the CSV editor, Markdown editor, or simple text editor. Downloading and re-uploading files is not necessary.
How many files or directories can I create?#
The extension does not limit the number of files or directories.
How quickly are files accessible via URL after uploading?#
Immediately after uploading or creating them. The extension generates a public URL instantly.
Can I use Mergado Files as a CDN for images on my online store?#
The extension was not designed as a CDN for fast loading of a large number of files by a single web page. For feed marketing purposes (adding images to an XML feed), however, it is fully sufficient.
Can I store sensitive data in Mergado Files, such as login credentials or internal price lists?#
We do not recommend it. Files are primarily intended as data sources for advertising, not for storing confidential information. While public access via link can be disabled, the extension is not designed as a secure repository for sensitive data.
Can I connect one file from Mergado Files to multiple projects in Mergado at the same time?#
Yes, and this is one of the greatest advantages of the extension. Simply create one configuration CSV file, connect its URL to multiple projects using the Data file import rule, and any change to that file is automatically reflected in all connected projects.
What happens to a file when I rename it?#
Its public URL changes, because the URL corresponds to the file name. If you are using the URL of this file in rules in Mergado Editor or other tools, you will need to update it manually.
Can I use Mergado Files to create a feed even if I don’t have an online store?#
Yes. Simply prepare a file in XML or CSV format, upload it to Mergado Files, and use its URL as the input source when creating a new project in Mergado Editor. You can then edit the feed content further directly in Mergado or directly in the file using the built-in editor.
