EmpCo on Kaufland#

EmpCo in brief EU Directive (EU) 2024/825 on empowering consumers for the green transition (EmpCo) applies in member states from 27 September 2026. It aims to ensure customers know — before purchase — how long the manufacturer guarantees the product, how long software updates will be provided, and how repairable the product is. Kaufland has therefore added corresponding attributes to its feeds. This article explains which attributes these are and how to fill in their values in Mergado.

What is EmpCo?#

Directive (EU) 2024/825, known as EmpCo (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition), was adopted on 28 February 2024 and applies in member states from 27 September 2026. It requires sellers to clearly inform customers before purchase about:

  • how long a statutory and extended warranty the product carries — if the warranty exceeds two years, it must be labelled with a standardised label,
  • how long the manufacturer will provide software updates,
  • how repairable the product is — claims such as “easily repairable” must not be misleading if a repair is in practice impossible or economically unviable.

ℹ️ More information about the directive can be found on EUR-Lex.

How Kaufland addresses EmpCo requirements#

Kaufland has added new elements to its feeds for EmpCo:

Offer feed (CSV and XML):

  • manufacturer_guarantee_years — manufacturer warranty length in years
  • battery_participation — CSV variant only
  • eco_participation — XML variant only

Product feed:

  • software_update_cycle_duration and software_update_cycle_date — length and end date of software update support
  • repairability_information — product repairability information
  • video — automatically populated with the first .mp4 video from your input feed

In addition, Kaufland has added 164 optional attributes to its specification (e.g. eprel_id, season, or pegi) — these are not automatically created in your project; create them as needed, the same way as any other custom element.

How to fill in the values in Mergado#

Fill in the new elements the same way as described for GPSR on Kaufland:

  1. Create the corresponding element in your project (e.g. manufacturer_guarantee_years).
  2. Add values either using the Bulk overwrite by selections rule (by product groups) or by importing a CSV file via the Data file import rule.
  3. Map the element to the relevant field in the campaign/feed settings for Kaufland and run synchronisation.

Removed and renamed elements#

Alongside the specification update, Kaufland removed 20 elements and renamed 5. If you use any of them in your project, update them according to the table:

Original name New name
clock_face_colour watch_face_color
watchstrap_colour strap_color
drivetrain_brand bicycle_gearshift_brand
numer_of_players number_of_players
topfbreite pot_size

Removed elements include energy_spectrum* and some energy_efficiency_class_* for white goods — if you use them, their values will no longer be transferred to Kaufland.

FAQ#

Do I need to fill in the new EmpCo attributes for all products?#

Only for products to which the directive applies. For such products, Kaufland requires manufacturer warranty, software update information, and repairability details — without them, your offer risks being inactive.

Do I also need to handle battery_participation and eco_participation?#

Only if your product is relevant to the given fee category — battery_participation belongs in the CSV variant of the offer feed, eco_participation in the XML variant.

What happens if I keep using a renamed or removed element?#

Kaufland will no longer recognise elements with the old name. For renamed elements, rename the element in the feed according to the table above; for removed elements, remove them — the value would not be transferred anyway.

Does EmpCo also apply to Allegro?#

This article covers attributes added by Kaufland due to EmpCo. For any related Allegro requirements, address these directly in the Allegro administration.
