- Category sorting – option to adjust the order of category rows and thus influence the application order
- Autocomplete for categories from the specific comparison engine’s category tree
Practical examples#
Example 1: Map online store categories to Google categories#
1. Creating a new rule:
- Open the “Rules” page.
- Click the New rule button.
2. Selecting the rule type:
- In the Rule type field, select the Rename Categories in Bulk option.
3. Selecting products:
- In the Query field, choose either All products or create your own Product query for specific products you want the rule to apply to.
4. Fill in the input categories:
- In the left column “If the current category contains”, enter all online store categories you want to map.
- 💡 Tip: Click the arrow next to the “Suggest categories” button and click “Prefill left side” – Mergado will automatically load all existing categories.
- Category order is important – the rule applies rows sequentially from top to bottom.
5. Fill in the target categories:
- In the right column “Will be replaced with this category”, enter the appropriate category for the specific platform.
- New values can be:
- typed directly as text,
- selected using autocomplete (e.g., type a keyword and choose from suggested categories),
- for Google formats, use the “Suggest categories” feature, which recommends 3 possible categories from Google’s category tree based on keyword similarity for each input category.
6. Naming the rule:
- In the last step, enter the rule name, for example “Map categories to Google categories”.
Example 2: Rewrite online store categories in an element#
For example in the CATEGORY element.
1. Creating a new rule:

4. Fill in the input categories:
- In the left column “If the current category contains”, enter all online store categories you want to map.
- 💡 Tip: Click “Prefill left side” – Mergado will automatically load all existing categories.
- Category order is important – rows are applied sequentially from top to bottom.
5. Fill in the target categories:
- In the right-side field “Will be replaced with this category”, fill in the categories for the given platform.
- New values can be:
- typed directly as text,
- selected using autocomplete (for supported formats), where you type a keyword and choose from the suggested categories.
6. Naming the rule:
- In the last step, enter the rule name, for example “Rename categories”.
Example 3: Rewrite supplier categories with your own categories#
This example shows how to set your online store’s categories for products instead of the supplier’s categories.
- In the left-side field “If the current category contains”, you can list all supplier categories from the input feed.
- 💡Tip: Use the “Prefill left side” button, which will automatically extract all input categories.
- Category order matters - rows are applied sequentially from top to bottom.
5. Fill in the target categories:
- In the right column “Will be replaced with this category”, enter your own target online store categories.
- New values can be:
- entered manually as text,
- copied and pasted from a spreadsheet (check the “Smart paste mode” checkbox),
- selected using autocomplete if you have imported your own category tree.
6. Naming the rule:
- In the last step, enter the rule name, for example “Rename supplier categories to online store categories”.
FAQ#
What is the Rename Categories in Bulk rule for?#
The rule allows you to bulk edit or map categories from the input feed (e.g., from the online store or supplier) to the target categories required by a specific platform – typically Google, Heureka, Zbozi.cz, or Glami. It helps unify the category structure, simplifying exports and improving data quality.
What is the difference between renaming and mapping categories?#
Within this rule, both terms mean the same thing. The rule maps input categories to output format categories. The mapped value is written into the correct element.
Do I have to enter the online store’s input categories manually, or can Mergado load them automatically?#
You do not have to type them manually. Using the “Prefill left side” function, Mergado automatically loads all input categories from the source feed. This saves you time and minimizes errors.
How does the “Suggest categories” function work?#
Mergado automatically offers three possible matching categories from the selected comparison engine’s category tree (e.g., Google or Heureka) based on keywords in the input category names. You can select the correct result from the suggestions or manually search for a better alternative.
How important is the row order in the rule?#
The order is very important. Mergado applies rows from top to bottom and for the left column, the logic is “if the element with input categories CONTAINS the value” (not an exact match). It is recommended to place more general categories at the top and the most specific ones at the bottom.
Can I paste already mapped categories in bulk from a spreadsheet (e.g., Google Sheets)?#
Yes. Enable the “Smart paste mode” checkbox and paste the category pairs (input → target) directly from a spreadsheet. Mergado automatically splits the values into the corresponding fields, which is ideal for large-scale mapping.
Can the rule be used to rename categories from multiple suppliers at once?#
Yes. You can apply the rule to products from different supplier feeds and unify them into a single online store category. For a larger number of suppliers, it is advisable to use multiple rules to keep the structure clearer.
How does the rule behave if some categories are missing from the input feed?#
If a product does not have the given category, the rule will not apply to it. For these cases, you can create a separate “Rewrite” rule to fill empty categories with a default value (e.g., “Uncategorized”).
Can I combine text category entries with variables?#
Yes. In the “Will be replaced with this category” field, you can enter a combination of text and variables, e.g.:
%CATEGORY% | %brand%,
which creates a more complex structure for export.
Can the rule be scheduled, for example, for seasonal category remapping?#
Yes. You can use the rule timer and specify when it should apply – e.g., when transitioning from seasonal assortments (Winter → Summer). After the specified interval expires, the rule will automatically stop applying.
How do I know if the category remapping was done correctly?#
After saving and applying the rules or after regenerating the feed:
- open the product detail and check that the category matches the output,
- or use the Rule walkthrough feature, which shows how the element value changed after the rule was applied.
What happens if the same input category is listed multiple times?#
Mergado uses the last occurrence (based on row order).
Can I export the created category mapping for backup or other projects?#
Yes. In the project’s extended functions, you can export the rule data to CSV or Google Sheets and then use it in another project. This is an ideal way to transfer mappings between projects or language versions of an online store.
What should I do if categories are not matched correctly?#
Check that:
- the input categories match exactly the text or content of the searched value,
- you are not using unnecessary spaces or other characters,
- and the row order matches the remapping logic.
💡 For more complex structures, use a temporary test rule with only a few rows.
Can this rule be used to completely remove categories?#
No. If you want to remove a category, use the “Rewrite” rule and enter an empty value for the given element. The “Rename Categories in Bulk” rule is exclusively for replacing or mapping values, not for deleting them.
